I was around back then too, in Los Angeles. Without doubt it was a far, far nicer place than it is today, but even then the downward spiral was well underway. Did you experience “smog days”, where the air was so visibly polluted you could almost cut it with a knife? When it hurt kids to breathe and they were kept home from school? They had almost finished dismantling the lower-pollution mass transit streetcar network to replace it with cars and freeways.
