Chris Hedges, I know you use a narrator occasionally here in Substack, a great one at that, but I have to admit that your voice and deliberation is one of the most effective voice I’ve heard. You move me. You inspire me. Your struggle and experiences, provides me strength and hope. Thank you, Sir! Thank you for your honesty and your powerful resistance, and journalism. World need more like you.
An inspiring, magnificent talk, extremely impressive in the depth of hard experience it is based on, and in the quality of its analysis based on that experience. And the passion, combined with intellectual rigor!
Chris, I know you see conspiracy everywhere, and there is certainly plenty to be found. But there are also facts, and regardless of your belief in the climate "emergency" which I do not share, you need to be aware of one fact that you cannot escape from: fossil fuels feed the planet, especially the so called "developed" countries. If you "just stop oil" most people in most countries will die within a few weeks.
Imagine if oil stops tomorrow. No agricultural machines will operate, no harvested products will move to market, no refrigeration will be available to store meat or dairy. The shelves will be empty. Hospitals will not have power because most of them get electricity from coal, and the unreliable power from wind and solar will not power the grid. It will shut down without caseload power. Without oil to refine there will be no gasoline. Imagine the generalized panic if gasoline is not available, which it will not be after a few days. Water will disappear from homes since it has to be pumped into the tanks, and without electricity that can't happen.
Our civilization is much more delicate than people who don't understand basic economics and engineering principles imagine. We no longer have 19th century tech to fall back on. Even the failure of the internet would be a disaster of enormous proportions. Failure of the grid would result in millions of deaths from all types of causes starting right away. Failure of the gasoline powered transportation system would mean the end of food distribution.
Without fossil fuel you and I will starve to death in the freezing darkness. As far as fools who want to shut down our civilization, if it were up to me I would publicly hang them. It would save hundreds of millions of lives.
El Regalo you are not. This reads as though you want to hang Chris Hedges. The “private” corporations are shutting down the part of our life which we call civilisation, that where we approximate to truth in honesty. The protest is like that implied in the teaching of Christ when shown a Roman coin. He asked whose image was on it, and taught that we should render unto Caesar that which is Caesar’s. I think he meant: give it back to Caesar and don’t use it, don’t be a part of the oppression, if you’re unwilling to pay taxes to Caesar. Let’s hope we all have something to barter while we try to get the rich to pay taxes while driving their limousines past polluted rivers, wastelands screened by of billboards displaying their default value system, closed factories and schools overrun by firestorms. Sorry, I forgot, the rich are away this week on holiday in the Caribbean.
I agree that the Climate Emergency is a diversion. It is a troupe believed by the academic class, and reflects what was spoken in the introduction. The Academic / Media class only talks itself. They fail to notice that Blackrock, and our Elites have no problem with the Climate Emergency, and see the narrative as to their advantage. The solutions being pushed, are worse for the environment than atmospheric carbon. The Question you should be asking is why do our Elites love Climate Change?
I would reflect that it allows them to Virtue Signal all day long, while making no sacrifice themselves. It allows our Academic Class to appear Virtuous while not jeopardizing their positions in the Institutions they are in.
What the Climate Emergency Narrative does not do, is provide real solutions to the real environmental problems we have.

Your comprehensive approach to the common global crises facing all of us is grounded in personal experience, right relationship to be found in the inter-related nature of these challenges and a deep spiritual grounding in a sense of moral responsibility to face reality, encourage support and act creatively. Thank you.

He doesn't mean shut off oil like flipping a switch. instead, he's encouraging innovation yes pushed on by activism.

Chris - I pray that you find a way to heal your PTSD and a voice that shows the path to healing our broken and hurting world.
