So powerful! Now I need to read Shakespeare again—and see the play in Brooklyn. Thank you, Chris, Eunice, and David. On the theme of reunification with lost ones, I couldn't 't help but think about Toni Morrison's Beloved. Also, a little known story by Kate Chopin called "The Story of a Hour." The protagonist, who suffers from heart disease, takes in the devastating news that her husband has died in a train crash and moves from grief to liberation—only to learn shortly after that he survived the crash. She dies of a heart attack. Interesting how this theme recurs.
I disagree the greatest writer was Samuel Langhorne Clemens and he made Shakespeare a comic. Twain wrote Scripture Shakespeare only mimicked it.
I know my Hebrew poetry Shakespeare was brilliant but wrote about things he didn't understand like his Merchant of Venice. There were no Jews in England after the Crusades. They were slaughtered or exiled. Elizabeth was a great leader but it took Cromwell to welcome back the strangers.
Milton wrote the great piece of English literature and its success made him write as we say in Yiddish Dreck. Dr Johnson created written English but his biographer was the genius and Johnson was an educated ignoramous.
America was a democracy of sorts from 1689 to 1789 but the rule of law is religion not politics.
Politics is about people and law is about divine providence and Darwin is about the roll of the dice and the book of Job.
Orwell taught political writing he was a giant's giants.
"but some are more equal than others" Stalin the PIG
Orwell's essay on Nationalism is 2023 from Israel to Twain's Missouri From Kiev to Being. from Jakarta to Moscow.
All is not Black there are now four FULL Democracies in the Americas. Canada, Costa Rica, Uruguay and now Chile with a new constitution.
Some of us knew long ago Naruda was assassinated we listened to the Weavers in the early fifties.
I have a CD set about the Generals there are no words only music.
I’ve always thought that “western” Jesus looked a lot like he was from a Shakespearean play which is not surprising given that King James commissioned the Bible during Shakespeare’s life.
Like Moe, below, I think it is interesting to compare Shakespeare with others...in this case, with Cormac McCarthy. The differences are immense: character development, resurrection, romance in Shakespeare and isolation, disfunction, magnificence in McCarthy. (I would say there is some scripture in that)
How LOVEly!! Thank you, Chris - and Eunice!
Love/peace, (as Lynne Stewart reminded!)

What is a flawed Democracy? It is like almost a virgin?

Thank you Chis & Co.
Eunice's comments about why we read, and what we gain when we do so, resemble Winfried Fluck's thoughts on aesthetic experience, which he developed from Wolfgang Iser and extended into the field off American Studies.
