Whatever the future holds, how can we not grieve the life forms leaving us now....as the climate heats up and complex webs of interdependence break. There is a wonderful documentary about our boreal forest on the Canadian National Film Board site....it's called Borealis I think.
Watch it if you can, and imagine the relationships that exist in that dying world....the red squirrels and the pine trees have evolved together so that the squirrel mothers somehow know when a big harvest of pine cones is on the way....and they have large broods. But in the film, a deviation in climate blows all the cones down....and the squirrels, that don't harvest them on the ground face starvation.
In little ways such as this small example........our boreal is dying. Fire speeds up the inevitable loss. Clear cut logging and other terraforming schemes do what they can to help....but the fate of that northern woodland is likely already written.
And I am grieving the Canadian wilderness......so vital, and still to so many, not that important unless we live there.
