During my years in Japan and from the early 2000s (over 20 years ago) I met a young chap from NY - he was a JET program assistant teacher at a friend's high school. But he wasn't originally from NYC - he was from Switzerland which is where he has - years since - returned to. On the question of Abu Ghraib - well, of course, he told me, torture was okay. And quoted some fictional idea of an attack being planned for which only torture could get the information to save the targets. I could not believe my ears. He was a bright chap - in a year in Japan he had built up an extremely impressive knowledge of kanji. But he was young - early to mid-20s. I hope as the years went by that the intelligence I perceived led him to re-evaluate his thinking on torture and was maybe the reason he returned to Switzerland. I can only hope so...

I can't help but think that if only US leadership had said "No" far earlier, we might have prevented or at least limited Israel's capacity for conducting this bloodbath. I basically agree, and am willing to risk a Trump presidency by voting third party. No matter which administration is elected, I believe we are entering a period of enormous peril for the US government.
