Hi, as a Canadian I am very worried about Trumps recent statements regarding using economic force to annex our country. I now know how the Austrians felt in 1932.
How worried should we be and what advice do you have for us?
Trump has recently mentioned Canada as the 51st State and possibly purchasing Greenland. Is he just trolling or does he actually want to expand the traditional size of the U.S.? Also, is there anyone that would sell him land / territory?
The entire Congress has violated their oath to the Constitution by ignoring Section #3 of the 14th amendment which clearly states that anyone having taken an oath to the Constitution who has subsequently been found guilty of insurrection cannot hold ant office on the state or federal level. Trump was found guilty of insurrection by a Colorado court and this decision was upheld by the Colorado Supreme Court. He is constitutionally barred from holding any office. So what the hell is going on?
The US Supreme Court blocked that enforcement and went even further to require that Congress enact legislation to implement this section of the 14the Amendment, knowing that that will never happen.
If Trump is a symptom, not the cause, it seems inevitable that the oligarchic dominance will play out. What are possible endpoints: social instability, financial crash?
Chris, Is Trump worse than Biden on Israel and genocide, possibly better, or exactly the same? Has Trump said or done anything that offers a glimmer of hope here? Thanks.
I don’t know if you want to dip into these muddy waters, but I’m very curious to know what you, and other important Substack voices, think about the ‘partnership’ between Substack and Bari Weiss’s Free Press. Personally I find Weiss ignorant, and appalling in her pretended support of free speech, simultaneous with support both for genocide, and for the most ruthless censorship machine the world has ever known. Personally, I’m terribly disappointed in this decision, and don’t see how Substack can justify this and still remain a credibly neutral platform. See you tonight.
Robert Reich recently published an article by Asli Aydintasbas, a former journalist working in Erdogan's Turkey and now visiting fellow at the Brookings Institution. In her essay on dealing with a Trump presidency, she states not to panic and that autocracies take time to create. She feels the US is too decentralization in its governance system for a complete takeover. That and congressional pushback, market forces, Republican dissent and more will restrain Trump. Thoughts?
How does the left deal with the consistent historical fact, guaranteed to repeat itself, that official violence and repression will be visited upon it, very likely successfully, as soon as there is the slightest hint that it might be influential, or attain political power?
Chris. I adore your work - and you too - but hey, why this discrimination against those of us who really don't want to burn the midnight oil for these live sessions which always start at midnight London time! How do we get to watch at a reasonable hour?
Hi Chris, it’s Deryck from Scotland. I’m actually fielding a question from my 16yr old daughter: “how can the American Congress ever detach itself from the Israel lobby?”.
What is the possibility of a General Strike? Many rank n file members of organized labour support and voted for Trump. He has on occasion touted how well he does with the Teamsters and the UAW members. Would it have to be more of a wildcat style strike? Like something out of the playbook of the old IWW.
Norman Finkelstein--RESPECT--states that the US institutions are too robust to allow for the US system of governance to devolve into an autocracy. Your thoughts?
Hey Chris, do you see any legal or diplomatic justice at all coming Israel's way for their genocide against Palestine?

Do you have a spare bedroom? I have a stable income and a friendly dog.

The list of issues to fight is long, in your opinion what are the most important 2 or 3 issues to focus on?
I want to add my voice to the Canadians asking, how do we best respond to Trump's bullying?

Take time? Watch what happens on Day One - a tidal wave of Trump fascist Executive Orders and decrees.
We've already seen the US "governance system" (and media) totally capitulate to Trump. And he's not even in office yet.

Hi Chris , Can you suggest an organization where I could volunteer full time to fight against the Genocide in Gaza?
