United Nations Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese shares stories of the immense suffering in Palestine and laments the gutting of international law in her new book, “When the World Sleeps”.
Agreed, but with a lot of help from her "friends". What if we didn't supply the bombs Israel used to implement a genocide, or if the "civilized' world condemned Israel for implementing this genocide? What if American politicians weren't bought and owned by AIPAC? What if we had not excused their behavior, and challenged anyone who did as being anti-Semitic? What if the Western world during WWI were not so prejudicial towards the Arab world, which continued through many decades, and in my opinion continues to this day.. Yes evil indeed, but with a lot of help from her "friends."
What if Netanyahu didn't have the hutzpah to even try to sell this BS which may become a reality.
Dear Congressman Stutzman,
I was glad to receive your proposed Congressional resolution endorsing my plan
to shift the framework for US-Israel defense cooperation from aid to partnership.
As I said in our meeting in Jerusalem on May 27, 2026, Israel deeply appreciates
the financial component of the military aid the United States has generously provided us
over the years. The time has now arrived for us to move from aid recipient to partner.
I am heartened by your enthusiastic support for our plan to develop a new
Memorandum of Understanding with the United States government that will draw down
U.S. financial military assistance over the next decade and replace it with what you refer
to as a "new framework of joint defense cooperation, co-development, coproduction and
mutual investment in areas including advanced missile defense, artificial intelligence
unmanned systems, cybersecurity and next generation military platforms."
I also appreciate your commitment to fighting the scourge of antisemitism in the
United States and around the world. (Yes, always the victim, so often the perception of abusers.)
Most Amerikkkans know next to nothing about the good work of the CIA.......and Mossad in some cases, as Chris reported about the Guatemala genocide.........all over the world.
Little countries imagining they could make things better for their people, got designated 'commies' and the death squads moved in.......complements of the School of the America.
People need to do a little research into America's regime change operations throughout the 80's.........the death toll from Amerikkka's war on communism is larger than most can imagine.
Yes......but pro Israeli shrink tanks in the USA will project that evil onto Iran. I wonder how long it will take us to realize that the people prone to calling their enemies evil, and refusing to negotiate with them.......or bombing them while negotiating with them....may know more about the inner workings of evil than they are capable of imagining.
Genocide is evil. Murdering children is evil. But I guess if you're a chosen people, or the biggest holder of weapons of mass destruction on the planet, I guess you get to designate what evil is and where it resides.
So sick of Amerikkka.........and her inane imaginings.
Sick of Amerikkka and Ipretty sick of Canada as well under the leadership of "Liberal" Mark Carney. I'm seriously beginning to wonder if Pierre Poilievre would've been much worse.
The degree to which Canada has been complicit in the genocide is perhaps best imagined by this shocking account of how invested our Charity sector is by Israeli organizations. It's a bit complex, but it shocked me.
And as for Carney?? Who in their right political mind would expect a central banker to chart a new course for Canada??? We;re up to our eyeballs in America's foreign policies...........have been for decades. Had Trump not attacked us as the vassal in line for take over that he knew we were, none of us would have batted an eyelash as Carney seeks to do two things at once:
1. get distance from the American juggernaut
2. stay connected to the American juggernaut.
Imagine another bitumen pipeline severing our Siamese twin relationship???
Imagine buying more 5-35s giving us sovereignty over our vast Arctic???
Yet the comments on a recent utube vid of Carney's speech at the Nato summit.......are mostly glowing.
And yet, as just one example, Ingamarie, Germany’s chancellor said Israel was doing the (west’s) work for it. Good citizens across Europe are being arrested for protesting a genocide. (You might want to check out Trita Parsi’s recent Substack post and letter to Germany about why its bid for membership in the Security Council should be denied). Europe’s history is at least as ugly as that of the U.S. It was the British who began the “ethnic cleansing” of Palestine. (Have you seen the film, “Palestine 36”)? And the British who instigated the toppling of Iran’s democratically-elected and secular government in 1952. It’s easy to criticize an empire when your own country is no longer part of one, yet still serves as its handmaiden. Carney’s hypocrisy has been pointed out by many. I’m not being defensive about the U.S. - I feel as you do about it. But all westerners have work to do in cleaning up their own countries. Spread the blame.
Yes, I've seen the film Palestine 36, and as a retired teacher of English, I've declared it a masterpiece.....few documentaries are capable of doing what that film accomplished, in many moments. A literary masterpiece must accomplish a kind of minimalism......a minimalism that conveys more emotion than mere facts are capable of. Many moments in Palestine 36 are so pointed.....and painful....that the deep tragedy of British Imperialism/capitalist Take....comes across.
Two examples: When the grandmother says to her young and beautiful grand daughter.........'run as fast as you can, away from here'..........any grandparent feels the pain. One of the last images of the film........that beautiful child running through the streets of Jerusalem.
And then the moment when the woman reporter answers her husband's query, "is it time to go home now?' with No, while her hand strokes his face with such gentleness and love.
I already knew about Great Britain's role in giving what they didn't own to someone else..........but the destruction of family, the breaking of love that came with that???? Palestine 36 captured it.
It's hard to expect ART from a colonial land theft covered over with pious bullshit about a Jewish homeland......but the film did it over and over again.
So yes: The entire west is culpable. Canada too..........and our expectation that a well spoken, competent central banker is going to any kind of outlier in that His Story of shame was naive in the extreme.
WE DIDN'T VOTE FOR THE LIBERALS.........but even in our party, we're outliers. In general, western people want to believe in our innate goodness....and avoid the truth that there is no such thing. Goodness comes from our actions....standing with the Palestinians has proven a bridge too far for most 'progressive' (whatever that means) Canadians.
A funny aside: Now that the evidence is mounting....friends who've been quiet but willing to shut me down, are now just quiet. Progress of a sort.
The world isn't sleeping--the Global North for the most part has deliberately turned away. There are good reasons, well, not good, but strategic reasons why. Such as a fragmented west Asia means area agreement about control of oil is unlikely.
The irony--if anything as horrific can be described as such--is how a people persecuted for so long themselves can do the same to others. Probably helps to have spent enough time among European and Euro descent colonial powers to pick up their ways. Lots of scientists dedicated to developing ever more efficient WMDs and methods of managing the disposable masses.
It's easy to cast Israel as The Great Evil, especially since they're playing the part so well. The countries of the Americas plus Australia and to some extent New Zealand get to ignore their own violent settler histories. Their own genocides. Oh, no, that's far in the past; besides, my relatives never killed natives or had slaves. Maybe not, but you've benefitted by that history. For all the talk by progressives about being on the side of Native Americans, I've yet to see them cede their property to its original occupants, then return to their ancestors' countries of origin. No, we're not evil, only those others.
There's likely another reason, too. This is a dress rehearsal for what happens when ecosystems finally break down. The brown hordes from the Global South will flood northward. Governments already efficient at handling the unruly, troops enured to torture, and citizens fearful of losing what they have will be expected to accept their survival means the deaths of those others.
Israel learned well from the nazis. Genocide is fine, just make sure you are on the winning side. Some Zionist ideologue put it thusly: he applauded nazi goals and methods. His only complaint was their choice of enemies.
Thanks again, Professor Hedges: Great conversation, lovely woman.
The genocide continues while we go about our daily lives, as though everything's fine. Absolute insanity is the water through which we fish are swimming.
I ALWAYS make the time to listen to these discussions between Francesca and Chris, to more fully understand the situation in Gaza. I feel it is the least I can do even as it is very distressing. Of course, I want to SCREAM at the grave injustices that the US government supports, and the international legacy media only helps to promote, distort and justify. It has become increasingly difficult and almost impossible to enjoy the good things in my life when I know of the suffering imposed on innocents, that continues without end and with total impunity. Thank you, Francesca, Chris, SP and all who made this information available to us.
You have described my state of mind on a daily basis. I do not feel justified enjoying my life of simple safe pleasures when the ppl of Gaza and the other countries the USA terrorizes cannot get justice. Couple that with the ppl around me choosing to ignore the plight of others here and around the globe. I donate to causes in the ground. The IRC and World Central Kitchen can get to some areas
Got it Kathy, especially " . . . people around me choosing to ignore the plight of others . . . " Be kind to yourself - don't let your heart harden if possible.
"I want to SCREAM..." I feel the same when I hear people talk about happiness; there are even courses at universities like Harvard and Stanford. Jefferson put the word in the Declaration, an alteration of Locke's life, liberty, and property, not permission to ignore the common good. Yes, the laughter of little kids, the cleverness of crows, the majesty of redwood trees, the inspiration of art are delightful. But they're invitations to connection, not isolated bits of individualized "happiness." As if ignoring the rest of the world were some sort of wisdom.
It’s like a constant noise in my brain, hard to escape. I read Naomi Klein’s introductory piece for her new Substack podcast today in which she wrote about the necessity of finding that “calm” space from which to generate meaningful action. The extent and relentlessness of the evil is overwhelming. I’m trying to focus on a couple of things that I believe will change things. Like Albanese (and unlike Chris, based on his recent interview by Al Jazeera), I believe in pursuing legal remedies, among others. In terms of enjoying things? My fantasy is getting away by myself for a while — like to a quiet beach. Someplace to clear away the noise, to find that calm space. I hope Albanese wins her case on appeal. She’s quite something.
Will some please explain how Israel ever can or will be stopped from its psychopathic project to torture the entire world into submission to its rule and evil will, if no one anywhere rises up to stop them by military force? Nothing less is going to stop these monsters.
"Acknowledgement and understanding" of what they have done and continue doing, every day, is impotent against these demons. They are either stopped militarily or they continue until the entire world is Greater Israel. Why does scarcely anyone understand this?
some, like insatiably rich white supremacists, for instance, benefit from the way these things are going. many [white] ppl in the global north don't care much, thinking 'these things' don't really concern them. those who do care and act are getting sanctioned, silenced, smear-campaigned and/or jailed.
i'm not sure whether the BRICS states can function as counterweights, start countermove-ments, or whether in the US the democratic socialists are beginning to raise some people's awareness and even change mindsets. the pro-palestine student encampments have done a lot in that direction already, haven't they?
my country still hasn't shaken its beholdenness to israel, drawing all the wrong lessons from its recent - very cruel - past, and is rapidly turning back into what can be called a [quasi]-fascist entity, alas.
My hope is that something less than that would work, namely, cutting off U.S. funding. The experts seem to think that if that happened, Israel would lack the means itself to continue its onslaughts, its perpetual wars. Israel has lost most of the U.S. public. Unfortunately, the U.S. public has lost control of its “leaders.” We do not have a democracy, as I think Albanese illustrated forcefully with her description of the 50,000.
We haven't had a democracy for about 50 years. Probably never, but now and for decades we've been jailed inside an oligarchy, kleptocracy, plutocracy, kakistocracy, which are all pretty much the same thing. This congress, and any foreseeable one, isn't going to break its handcuffs with Israel. AIPAC owns nearly every member of it, so the funding of its genocide and project to expand into "Greater Israel," meaning the entire middle east, is not going to be constrained.
Without a coalition of countries standing up to Israel and basically annihilating them militarily, the Zionazis will continue their crimes until all Arabs are dead or isolated in some remote, inhospitable corner of the earth. They aren't going to have it any other way, so their way must be nullified, and the only way to do that is by defeating them through force of arms. It was the only way to defeat the Nazis in 1945, and the Zionists are obviously following the same playbook Hitler did. The whole world knows it. Tit for tat. If they aren't defeated and punished for their countless crimes against humanity, they will simply prevail over all of the world that now despises them.
I think part if not most of Israeli “hatred” for Arabs is manufactured to justify land grabs. I remember reading a quote by Ben-Gurion, I think in the Mearsheimer-Walt scholarly report on the Israel lobby. I’m paraphrasing, so please forgive the loose quote, but he said something to the effect that he didn’t blame Arabs for resisting Israeli occupation; after all, Israel was taking their land. And yes, Israelis had an ancient claim to the land, but why should that matter to Arabs. And he concluded by invoking the Holocaust while pointing out that Arabs were not responsible for it. Of course there’s a lot of racism behind what Israel is doing, too, with western complicity. I saw a documentary called Coup 52 about Britain and the U.S.’s coup against the democratically elected Iranian leader, Mosaddegh, in that year. It included a lot of footage from actual events that happened at the time and the filmmakers interviewed people who had been involved or affected by those events. The racism of the British, which they casually acknowledged, was really stunning, at least to me. Of course we see that same thing currently in the U.S. regarding Palestinians. I watched a segment on cable news the other night in which NYT op-ed news contributor, Michelle Goldberg, was interviewed about the recent allegation of sexual assault against Maine senatorial candidate, Graham Platner. Goldberg was sanctimoniously critiquing the Democratic Party for not having adequately vetted and ousted Platner early on. I don’t excuse sexual assault, especially as a former civil rights attorney who has represented many of its victims. However, when another guest cautioned against excluding support for a genocide in determining whether a candidate is fit for office, Goldberg dismissed him immediately and angrily. She said that “policy differences” — her characterization of a candidate’s or party’s position regarding a genocide — could not compete in importance with moral failings demonstrated by a candidate in his personal life. She actually said that. And she was arrogant about it. She’s a “highly respected” and sought-after journalist for “the paper of record.” The only explanation I have for her comment is a deep-seated and unapologetic racism. Something so unconsciously embedded that she doesn’t have to justify it, even to herself. Goldberg represents what we’re up against in terms of U.S. “media,” and generally, with respect to who has influence and power in the country.
Great comment, and I applaud your attention to eliminating typos of all kinds, which almost no one else ever does. M. Goldberg is almost as pro-Zionist, pro war crime, as Bari Weiss, head of ZBS News. They're reflexive Zionazis without the shadow of a clue how deeply racist they are.
I personally don't believe Platner did all the horrible things they're accusing him of--though I'm not certain about any of it. The Dems will do ANYTHING to marginalize and neutralize any leftist surge against their status quo commitment to changing nothing of consequence. And they're doing that now. They're all thoroughly contemptible and no one with a vestige of conscience should vote for any of them. Not for fascist Republicans either! A plague on both their houses.
Yes! As I’ve posted elsewhere on Substack, no party that supports a genocide, and that includes both the Republican and Democratic parties in the U.S., “has a right to exist.”
Please intervene immediately to save the life of pediatrician Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya. It is against international law to target physicians; they are a protected class. It is also against international law to hold prisoners without charge for over 18 months.
WHAT YOU CAN DO:
This is a matter of utmost urgency. Please take as many of these actions as you can and please spread the word to others.
1) Send emails using these different tools:

I am humbled by her courage. Francesca Albanese is a hero. Thank you Professor Hedges, for your continued work, and to everyone who focuses attention on this abominable genocide.
Western legacy media is the new Goebbels, just spread the propaganda (I get so stressed out listening to the horrors people go through, then the nonchalant way the media deals with it, I need to take a break from listening. Stopped after the BBC story)
Can someone explain to me why the US can simply make every single financial entity in the world comply with absurd imperialist demands, like cutting people off any transaction? Why are they so afraid of going against this decaying empire? Wouldn't just ignore it accelerate the fall, therefore making the world a lot safer? I know it happens, I just don't understand how easily the rest of the world accepts this.
The Institute for Middle East Understanding Policy Project (IMEU Policy Project) provides a draft letter demanding the immediate release of Dr. Abu Safiya that links to respective members of Congress based on home addresses. The link for the letter is posted on IMEU’s website: imeupolicyproject.org.
we all need to do that every day, even more than once a day, not just once!!! that's what the Israel lobby does, they are more persistent than us!!! please use the other links also as some of them go to different decisionmakers.
the least i can do is not buy from suppliers that are fully involved in, or even operate, parts of the ruth- and relentless war machinery. why not buy the book directly from the publisher?
not really. bc i can't stop the carnage [no matter how many things i don't buy from enablers of genocide], and i can't bring my country's leaders to stop it, either. they keep contributing to it.
if you feel harshly criticized by my "the least i can do ...", i'm honestly sorry i caused you discomfort.
No, I was surprised it was on Amazon, and so is Mate's book which deals with Ukraine, the coup, and our ultimate goal to bring down Russia.
Trump hit Iran last night and today. This cease fire has become no more then wishful thinking, and our dear president has referenced Iranian officials as scum. I really don't think there is going to be any happy ending. Not to mention Israel wants to integrate themselves into our military so we become as one, then we don't have to give them bombs and money since they will be totally integrated into our military establishment. I'm beginning to feel these could be the end times.
"I'm beginning to feel these could be the end times." Me too Fran. Anyone with a functioning heart and brain would be expected to feel this way too. Yet, most of the people I know STILL don't want to know or discuss any of the dire news that is available thru Independent Media. I'm told it makes them unhappy or sad! It makes my blood boil. Happy El Nino!
My mother was a devout anti-Zionist in a time when people perceived it as being anti-Semitic, but in today's world that's become a hard sell. So I'm growing up listening to my mother talk about the end times, and wouldn't you know it's when the US follows Israel's demands to bomb, bomb Iran, and according to her too often we accommodate Israel even when it doesn't serve our interest, and as you know we did bomb bomb Iran, and we even did it again last night. That peace deal is dead, MoU is over. Reminds me of Netanyahu and his genocide cease fires, and you wait a week, and he's at it again and it continues to this day, although you wouldn't know it listening to the mainstream media. My mother would also talk about Lebanon, and other Middle Eastern countries, but Lebanon in her scenario was pivotal, but by that time she barely got a listen, since I didn't want death right around the corner. I did listen in on her conversation with a friend, and only remember Russia was involved in this mess, or another mess, and by time it came to an end the world was gone. Now he's seems to back Ukraine and is piling on complements for Zelensky who always seemed to be someone who was solely self interested, and he is.
6 Senators led by Van Hollen and Sanders are working to oppose moving forward on the Senate NDAA (annual defense bill) until U.S.-Israel defense and intelligence integration (Sec. 1217) is properly debated. Join A New Policy in pressing all Senators to make this commitment: No votes on NDAA without a vote on 1217.
I particularly liked the following dialogue at the one-third mark of the interview:
Part 1 of Albanese's response to Chris Hedges is pitch perfectly correct. The 2nd part is more convoluted. I have to repeat what I've said in previous posts elsewhere: Markets and Money Systems are not actual forces of nature; they are not actual physical laws. They are a sort of constructs - almost guidelines - I would say a paradigm. So the real question is what do the "Masters of Mankind"(Chomsky's phrase) have in mind for the rest of us?
Chris Hedges[at 18m37s mark] : Well, you write in the book, I think correctly, that the genocide in Gaza has kind of exposed a new and very frightening world order, one that has utter disregard for the rule of law. You write, “The crisis in Gaza is symptom of a global crisis. I think more and more often that all of this, while it is bound to instill fear, must give us courage. The system that represses the Palestinians, a well-established alliance between Israel and in all the other states whose elites guarantee it the impunity it has always enjoyed, is the same one to which we belong. It is the system that decides for us on issues that are crucial to our lives without listening to us and representing us. It is the system that transforms secure jobs into part-time and temporary work, rights into privileges that alienates us from each other.
making us all more fragile and insecure, that considers solidarity a subversive act and empathy a form of mental and social dysfunction.” You actually talk about for you, Palestine was the red pill in the matrix. Talk about that or place Palestine and the genocide in that global context.
Francesca Albanese[at 20m mark]:
Part I
"Yeah, I think those who have read the book, and then I’d like also to say a few words about how difficult it’s been to have this book made available to the US readership, because there has been such pressure from pro-Israel support groups against it. You guess why. Yeah, for me, Palestine has been a revealer. It’s not that all of a sudden, we woke up in a world that is dominated by the US, especially the world we are part of politically, militarily, strategically, the US is the dominant character here. And Israel is a sort of extension of it in the Middle East. It’s an extension of Western power and Western supremacy. I know that the Israelis do not like it, but I do also believe that they do not realize how instrumentalized they are because of interests that are above all of us. We tend to think in terms of states as the ultimate decision makers. We think of it in democracies. We think of it in dictatorships. But, in fact, I don’t think that states are the decision makers. States today, more than before, more than a few decades ago, respond to certain interests, economic, military and financial interests that are connected to the main power holders in this world. I mean, and there are numbers. What I’m saying may sound like conspiracy theories to people who might not know enough about the inequality of the world. The Thomas Piketty Institute in its most recent inequality report mentions this data, which I found shocking, staggering, the fact that half of the world population retains altogether one third of the wealth which is retained by 50,000 people in the world. I repeat, 50,000 people in the world retain three times the wealth retained by half of the world population. How is it possible? Who are these? Clearly, they are not just individuals like you and I. They retain pockets of power. And it’s those connected to the extractive industry for the control of natural resources, those connected to securing the use of force, military power and surveillance, and those connected to financial transactions, corporations and banks and pension funds. So, these are the main powers with certain corporations like pharmaceuticals more influential than others, or those related to tourism for example. However, this is the brain power of those 50,000 people."
Part II
"And today there is also Big Tech. They are above the law. I mean, when you try to sue corporations, you are inundated with problems, with issues, with more legal issues, with more litigation. And so, it’s impossible to face this. Palestine has revealed this world order. Palestine has been the epicenter of it because - this is the reason why I was sanctioned for that report, “From Economy of Occupation to Economy of Genocide” that we discussed earlier last year, Chris. But again, explaining to the world that while the economy of many Israeli families and individuals was collapsing, the stock exchange of Tel Aviv was rising, skyrocketing, doubling, tripling its value, has been a revealer. So, there was someone profiting from the genocide and these are Palantir and the likes, these are Lockheed Martin and the likes, the military industry, not just Israeli and US, but all connected. And because we are all connected, this is the second and last part of the story, we are part of it. We are part of it as consumers. We are part of it as producers, because you know how many trade unionists or workers I’ve been speaking with over the past two years. You know how many consumers I’ve been speaking to and they say the same, “You know how difficult it is to get out of this market. You know that we would like not to work for this company, which is for example connected in Italy to the military industry like Leonardo,” but they’re scared of losing their job. They realize that their fragility is part of the system because they have to choose between producing weapons that are used to kill children and not working at all. But this means that we are part of or we are seeing pockets of populations who are just sacrificial. They are sacrificial entities, sacrificial beings and probably we can change this order. This is the other thing that Palestine is telling us. Through boycotting, divesting, we can break the ties of the system and through sanctions we can curtail the complicity with Israel. But this requires individual commitment."
Israel has proven itself to be quintessential evil incarnate.

As I said in our meeting in Jerusalem on May 27, 2026, Israel deeply appreciates
the financial component of the military aid the United States has generously provided us

I am heartened by your enthusiastic support for our plan to develop a new

U.S. financial military assistance over the next decade and replace it with what you refer
to as a "new framework of joint defense cooperation, co-development, coproduction and
mutual investment in areas including advanced missile defense, artificial intelligence
unmanned systems, cybersecurity and next generation military platforms."
I also appreciate your commitment to fighting the scourge of antisemitism in the
United States and around the world. (Yes, always the victim, so often the perception of abusers.)

Truly more than enough blame to go around.
W.F., the U.S. Empire is even more evil, with the Zionist genocidal apartheid state a close second.
It's a bit complex, but it shocked me.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k7U5tr7x0ng
I hope that link works.
Smart Canucks that we mostly are........not.

Thanks. I posted the IMEU site before I saw your comment. I signed its proposed letter and sent it to my representative.
You can get her book on Amazon.
Or don't use Amazon, they support zionism, is on the BDS list. Get her book form an independent book store
the least i can do is not buy from suppliers that are fully involved in, or even operate, parts of the ruth- and relentless war machinery. why not buy the book directly from the publisher?
Feel better?????????????
not really. bc i can't stop the carnage [no matter how many things i don't buy from enablers of genocide], and i can't bring my country's leaders to stop it, either. they keep contributing to it.
if you feel harshly criticized by my "the least i can do ...", i'm honestly sorry i caused you discomfort.

Excellent interview. Thanks Francesca and Chris.
