A bankrupt liberal class, by signing on for the Zionist witch hunt against supposed antisemites and refusing to condemn Israel for its genocide, provided the bullets to its executioners.
The Palestinians are two million Kitty Genovese’s, who was raped and murdered, as her neighbors shut their windows to stifle the sound of her screams.
The next time anyone complains when you compare the Zionists to the Nazis, you may mention three things. The Nazis did not post their crimes on Tiktok,(or its equivalent), or brag about them in the media. The Nazis didn’t control the press, and the narrative, in the countries which opposed them. And most importantly, nearly every country that surrounded Germany made great sacrifices to stop them. And did.
I don’t know if either I, or my society, will recover from the knowledge that (apart from Yemen), no country, no military, no government, has intervened to stop these psychopaths. They just shut their windows to drown out the screams.
Thank you, Chris, well stated. Something about how our language is being rewritten, a new version of New Speak. And an iron fist of the state, choking off your words.
There is a wonderful book by Victor Klemperer entitled: The Language of the Third Reich.
Klemperer was the professor of French Literature at Dresden U but removed from his post in 1935.
He was forced to wear a yellow star.
His conviction in the book is that the language of the Third Reich helped to create the culture.
"It isn't only the Nazi actions that have to vanish, but also the Nazi cast of mind, the typical Nazi way of thinking, and its breeding grounds: the language of Nazism."
The fascists understand Gramsci and the need to build a hegemonic superstructure.
They use rhetoric and redefine language as they insert new words into the culture.
LTI – Lingua Tertii Imperii: Notizbuch eines Philologen, is a book by Victor Klemperer, Professor of Literature at the Dresden University of Technology.
Thank you Kathleen for providing the information. The book is superb and allows one to understand how language, in this case the language of fascism, permeates throughout our culture. Soon, even now, it will be fashionable to be fascist, using clothing lines, cologne lines, fashie haircuts and boot camps for the youth. Stay strong.
Also, for the past 70+ years, the neo-liberal think tanks have been altering all conversation to fit within their framing, deliberate thought manipulation by the big-business half of fascism, as expressed thru the likes of Heritage Foundation and its Project 2025.
Hilary Clinton and Joe Biden also supported the U.S. invasion of Iraq. It didn’t stop the Democratic Party from nominating them for the presidency. And Kamala Harris ridiculed and tried to shame anti-genocide protesters during her campaign. When Tim Walz was recently asked twice by Chris Hayes on MSNBC whether he believed he and Harris should have charted a different course than Biden on Gaza, he refused to answer both times. And Congressman Ro Khana of California recently said on Zeteo that opposition to Netanyahu and advocating to cut off funding for Israel would not be successful strategies for a Democrat seeking the presidency. Chris is also right of course about the “liberal” academics and the media. Many of us are too young to remember that the NYT and the Washington Post also chastised critics of the Viet Nam War, including Martin Luther King, in their editorials. I hope that Chris is right that they have finally done themselves in.
I will never understand why this country is so subservient to Israel. Why am I allowed to criticize every country, including my own, but risk arrest if I say, “Free Palestine”. Are we still on a guilt trip for Hitler? (I was branded as antisemitic for asking that question.) Why is Israel allowed to buy politicians at the same time they and the MSM bleat, “Russia, Russia, Russia”? My disgust overflows.
I think I can help you out, Susan. It's the bottom line. It's why there are Chinese students at Harvard--they pay out-of-state fees, so the U gets more money per student.
Here's something else: I have a good sense for anti-Semitism as I'm Jewish and pretty leftwing (which is why I'm here with Chris Hedges and you all). It's the hairs on the back of my neck, which stand straight up when I encounter anti-Semitism. When people talk about The Rothschilds, the hair stands up. When they talk about Paul E. Singer, they stay down. Look him up, but before you eat dinner. What Israel is doing, and the US to support it, is creating more, and justifiable, anti-Semitism. Not with the educated, who can decipher between a Jew, a Zionist, and an Israeli. But for the people who don't think but just react. This makes me terrified. Will someone kill me because I look Jewish? This genocide, this extermination, is making people crazy. It's so wrong, so inhumane, even for the young men and women in the IDF who don't have a choice (OK, they can go to prison if they don't serve) yet we're humans. I have a dear friend who lives in Israel, whose father helped Jews escape the Nazis in The Netherlands. She is disconsolate. The government there is beating up protesters. Everything is in a pot with way too hot a fire underneath.
Marcia I think most Americans paying attention to what is going on in Israel don't assume that American Jews support this genocide, and most have grown up knowing quite a few people who are Jewish, or have friends who are Jewish, or relatives who are Jewish, so I don't see them making that assumption. People, like Mate and many others will acknowledge, and rightly so, that Israeli's support this genocide, but lets not forget who is footing the bill for Israel to implement it.
Marcia, this isn’t about you or your fears. Unarmed Palestinians have been slaughtered since 1948. Palestinians have been imprisoned for decades without charges. Now the Zionist focus is on ending civil rights for legal residents and citizens who speak out in the U.S. We should have been out of Israel a long time ago — instead we’re forced to fund a genocide.
Contradictions are the only thing that can save us. Israeli actions have now synthesized into internal civil war within the country. Israel must disappear. Does anyone really want to support theological fascism?
I feel for you, and you are RIGHT to be scared - because these criminals have painted a target on every Jew (this is like the inquisition in bloody old Spain where the mob hunted down whoever was declared a heretic - it is absolutely horrible - I am afraid we are heading for WW3 - a distraction from all the totally unsolvable problems we 'kicked' down the road!)
They are creating a more intelligent and coherent fascism. They are aided by technology, the force of production, or one of them, that has left class consciousness in the wind.
Your concerns about mindless backlash are completely valid. Nothing has made jewish people less safe in the last 25 years than actions of Israel. It's no wonder Singer is funding various ways to sheepdog various antisemites into Zionism, otherwise the backlash would be even sooner.
But those Christian Zionists are not our friends! Thye're only pretending to be our friends! Or, in their own thinking, they are our friends in order to convert us so we don't spend eternity in a lake of hellfire. Or something like that.
However, I had no idea he was doing that and I'll need to look it up. The way I know Singer is that his Elliott Group bankrupts countries. Ick.
Wow. "Rooted in the Hebraic tradition"?! That means they believe that errant children should be stoned to death? Oh, and that women accused of having an affair should take an abortifacient? (Numbers Chapter 5 verses 6-31 which includes, "It's always the woman's fault. Never the man's."
I'll look at the others later as I'm calling for a candidate for Supervisor now. Thank you for this research! Really impressive.
It doesn’t get any worse than Jews like myself being called anti semitic for condemning the same policies my ancestors suffered under the Nazis. What’s even more galling is that many of the people, like my own governor, who are accusing me of it, aren’t even Jewish. Zionists in Israel burning Palestinian babies doesn’t bother them but Jewish students protesting it need to silenced.
Why do we hear so little about the Israeli soldiers who are reentering the USA and using the chemical weapons they deployed against the Palestinians to attack the student anti-war protesters here??
Well, the story said it was found to be “novelty fart spray” not skunk spray, and the student was given $395,000 because. I agree though, that it is unconscionable that the U.S. invites former IDF to either return to America (dual citizens) or to immigrate here without vetting them. There are estimated to be more than 22,000 former IDF living in America now, including at least one congressional rep and a White House advisor. American servicemen are held responsible for their abuses during war, but IDF are not vetted at all. I believe — just based on the number of atrocities committed by the IDF — that some former soldiers are war criminals. Rather than holding them to any standard of law, they are welcome here. We are living in Argentina.
I am impressed by the rarity of more mature adults like Columbia university's Franke whose clear sightedness and compassion and capacity for discriminating between truth and fiction are demonstrably imperiled as we look around at the quality of our leadership across domains. Her courage! To buck the tide that eschews standing out on moral principles? She stands for courage, fierceness, intellectual honesty, just-ness, fidelity to truth, academic freedom and freedom of speech and assembly, no matter what. A rare bird. How did the rest of us USA citizens become so fearful?
I hope this issue is not turned into Trump rants, and yes his response on this issue disgusts me, but his position and supply of bombs to Israel was preceded by the Biden administration that set the precedent for what continues under Trump. Our forever pro-Israel policies preceded both of them. I believe, as Jeffery Sachs does, as well as others, that our Middle Eastern wars, spelled out in Netanyahu's 1995 book, Fighting Terrorism, were fought for Israel. We are a country who has allowed ourselves to be under Israel's thump in which AIPAC plays a significant role in making sure we stay there. Our refusal to acknowledge Israel's genocide has been decades in the making in which we have allowed and supported their many abuses towards the people of Palestine.
Joe Biden gave the mantle of Manifest Destiny to Benjamin Netanyahu. America didn't need it anymore. Nobody needs it anymore and it should have been flushed in with the rest of the sewage long ago.
I don't think "liberal" is a very evocative term for the Democrats and their ethos. Earlier epochs illuminate the role played by these bourgeoise political parties: the Social Democrats in Germany after WWI, and the Miliukov/Kerensky government in Russia between the February and October Revolutions. They are a "fair weather, steady as she goes" party, equally impotent against both fascism and revolution. As was the case with the two other examples, the Democrats, too, abhor decisive action, and resent the political conditions that demand such action of them. Thus their silence in the face of the our fascists. We have no "left wing" mostly because the Democrats act as a friction brake on any actual left wing politics. Notice how much more vigorously they attack progressives in their own parties than the fascists in the other.
All that Chris points out is very true. The oligarchs don't like liberalism. But also important to keep track of a few facts and the ultimate goal of it all. Minouche Shaflk was 1) the youngest ever vice president of the World Bank at 36 2) deputy managing director of the IMF during Arab Spring 3)deputy governor of the Bank of England 4) a billionaire. She, and they, knew exactly what side she was on and who would get thrown under the bus long before she was hired. Her whole life is in service to power and the bottom line. And countless countries have suffered the consequences of those heartless institutions.
"Antisemitism" is a remarkably clever, emotionally charged smokescreen, along with other age-old tools of Divide and Rule, using religion, ethnicity, color, sexuality, income, misogyny (as in barefoot & pregnant) etc. It works. We live in a white supremacist colonial empire (and as someone commented, white supremacists have never liked Jews - they use them) running on its addiction to Power, Greed for Oil and Resources, real estate coastlines, etc. and the gargantuan profits of an endless War and Weapons economy.. It seems important to always keep our eyes fastened on the bottom line of that bottomless pit, on the stock markets and the ballooning number of conscienceless ivy league billionaires. There's not only liberalism in those universities, there's the threat of unwanted competition along with the fears of creative organized rebellion.
I doubt that the current situation of Harvard and Columbia has much to do with throwing students under the bus. Certainly Columbia bent the knee to Trump very quickly. Trump is both an opportunist and a bully. He has a group of Christian Nationalists and their authoritarian proclivities egging him on and most definitely he is in his element and taking full advantage of various opportunities. The universities are also experiencing blow back from policies that are of little interest to the majority of the citizenry.
It is easy to call others cowards. Harvard is pushing back and this will be a long campaign.
The antisemitic campaign by Trump is a convenient cover for his authoritarian tendencies.

Ro Khana told the truth. And he did it well, so that we all understood. I'm sorry for this, but admire his ability to spell it out.
I think it’s a mistaken belief. It may have been true before social media, when the flow of information was under more Zionist grip
I hope you're right.
