And the biggest suicidal folly of all: Ignoring the ever increasing Climate Catastrophe which amounts to a War Against Nature. Drill Baby Drill. Burn Baby Burn. Complete Insanity.

L O's avatar

because the US military is the world's largest polluter

Loren Bliss's avatar

Hence my growing conviction that the existence of Trump; the military oath-breakers who are now his private legions of death; the high-tech barons and their ChristoNazi ideologues; and of course the MAGAT rabble who maliciously voted into being the final failure of the former United States, all indicate the emergence of a new subspecies of (sub)human, Homo sapiens inhumanus. I say this because their utter absence of empathy (publicly underscored by their fanatical assertions all empathy is a sin) is collective sociopathy of an unprecedented magnitude; moreover, it obviously includes the replacement of the love-instinct with a far-more-powerful hate instinct -- probably the (deliberate) product of five decades of relentless neoliberal conditioning. (See https://news.yale.edu/2025/03/06/violent-experiences-alter-genome-ways-persist-generations )

Jeff's avatar

Global warming has nothing to do with the military, despite the military being the biggest polluter. Global warming/climate change is caused by living industrially, aka extracting and burning fossil fuels for energy. THAT's the problem. The military is just industrial like the rest of the world. To be clear, I'm as anti-war and anti-military as anyone, but the military is very far from being a root cause of this problem.

Red states are moving ahead with wind and solar, and Trump can't stop them. It's about money, not politics. Red state S. Dakota just greenlit a $750 mill wind farm, the biggest in state history.

We'll wind up in a third world war before climate impacts our lives to the point that people across the world will die as a result of it. from

Schrodinger’s Cat's avatar

People across the world are dying now from climate impacts and have been doing so for years now. Hundreds of thousands a year if not more have died from climate impacts from many legitimate estimates. Additionally there is massive property destruction akin to damage from war zones due to climate impacts. It is happening now.

Fran's avatar

I was talking about climate change Impacting our lives on a much broader scale then now. I taught this subject.

Schrodinger’s Cat's avatar

Well you did not convey that clearly if at all in your response when you wrote your post. You simply stated that we will end up in a third world war before climate impacts lives to the point that people across the world will die as a result of it. That is simply wrong. People are dying now from climate impacts. And if one is being honest you nor I have any idea which might take out more lives in the future and which will come first, whether a third world war or the ongoing climate collapse. By the way my original post was simply pointing out in my opinion that ignoring climate catastrophe is a bigger suicidal folly than a war with Iran. Nothing more than that. Have a nice day.

forceOfHabit's avatar

Which would you rather suffer, the cancer of global warming or the heart attack of nuclear war? In this case, I'm going with cancer because at least there will be more time for remission or even a cure. At least, there is a growing awareness of the seriousness of climate change and ecocide, and the necessity of action; nuclear war offers no such hope for the future of civilization.

Jeff's avatar

But that's a lesser-of-evils argument, the same one that's used to get people to support evil Democrats party in order to oppose evil Republicans. It's all evil and we have to oppose all of it. Who cares which is worse?

Paul Edwards's avatar

The thing is in motion, and there is no god to help. Man, in spite of eons of self-deception, and his elaborate myths, has to face the fact that there is no deity and no help outside himself.

Man, universally, is too steeped in fairy tales to take responsibility for his own folly, and now, soon, must suffer the punishing storm always visited on all who are rash, deluded, and cruel.

Michael J. Otting's avatar

Paul,

The god delusion has been warping minds and behaviors for, well...a long time. I can live with a Zeus or, hell, pick one from any culture, but the absolute goddamn worst is the cult of christianity, especially now with these christofascists foaming at the mouth. The cult of catholicism is responsible for so much suffering and evil in the world. Just ask what's left of the peoples who inhabited the "new world" when the Spanish and Portuguese arrived. Black Anericans and the First Peoples know what belief in a christian god has done. The god card is just a power trip.

Humans are simply afraid of dying. Gotta pretend there's more when there ain't.

Jeff's avatar

Islam and Judaism are just as bad as Christianity, and have done just about as much damage. It's the monotheistic crap from the Middle East that's the big religious problem.

Jeff's avatar

Stated another way, the problem is humans' failure to evolve mentally and spiritually (not religiously). See this book outline for details: https://rewilding.org/fixing-humans-by-expanding-our-consciousness/

Israyhell wants IRAN...LAND. OIL. ALL resources. But without the Iranians. Another - actually continuing - GENOCIDE at any moment? Israyhell says, "we want/you jump" - the US, its puppet state, asks how high while already having sent weapons of mass destruction to commit crimes (again, see the 1950s coup) against the Iranian people. BTW... son-in-shit jarrie k. there to INK LAND DEVELOPMENT DEALS....on behalf of israylis...no Muslims allowed. No buddhists. No atheists. They MAY admit evangelical christofascist nut jobs.. BUT WHATEVER THEY PILLAGE AND PLUNDER...it's for israelis ONLY. Sorry, Mr. Hedges for profane talk...my brain is presently on my living room ceiling. The "chosen..." Indeed.

Ukraine gave up their nuclear capacity - and we see where that git them.

Feral Finster's avatar

Ukraine never had nuclear capacity. The Soviet Union did. The United States afterwards executed a coup and goaded its Ukrainian puppet state into a war.

Susan Marsden's avatar

Following the 1991 Soviet collapse, Ukraine briefly possessed the world's third-largest nuclear arsenal, inheriting thousands of strategic and tactical warheads. However, Ukraine did not have independent operational control (launch codes), and surrendered them by 1994-1996 for security assurances, including against threats to its sovereignty.

Feral Finster's avatar

Ukraine also didn't have any delivery systems, and had a constitution that guaranteed neutrality,.which the Americans forced them to scrap.

Ingamarie's avatar

True enough..........but we hate like the devil to ever be wrong in the privileged west, and we're willing to defend to the death of our own countries our right to always be the Good Guys in any war we foment.

Not only that: We expect when Peace is achieved that the losers will get to set the terms and the winners be sanctioned for their audacity.

It Sucks to be Us.....my friend. Big Time.

Feral Finster's avatar

Right and wrong never had anything to do with it. This is a question of power. Nothing more.

Ingamarie's avatar

For the movers and shakers........but don't forget: They wouldn't get anywhere if they didn't gull the people..............and the people want to be on the side of right.

The people, after all is said and done.............can tell a genocide when they see it. Many are just too ground down, over worked or silenced to believe it matters a jot what they think or say or do.

We have to change that.

Feral Finster's avatar

Humans are herd animals, as easily led as any sheep or dog.

Ingamarie's avatar

Dont' know if you realize it, but ideas of original sin, or original stupidity are right wing ideas.

My experience as a teacher tells me such ideas are wrong.....but then again, all sweeping generalizations would be wrong, would they not???

We could change the world in a generation or two........if all children were loved, cared for, and educated as they should be.

Loren Bliss's avatar

The Trumpstein Pervo-Plutocracy that (actually) rules the world no longer needs to "gull the people"; that is the pivotal change implicit in the triumph of the ChristoNazis' "Unified Reich" -- the fact technology has given our Infinitely Evil Masters genuine omnipotence, which means We the People now have no more influence than antebellum slaves. (I believe that will eventually change -- which is why it's vital to continue our resistance -- but the only transformation of sufficient magnitude to make humanitarian progress again possible is the end of the tyranny-enabling technology that defines patriarchy, therefore the complete destruction of patriarchy's so-called civilization, and probably the death of 90 percent of our species [if indeed any of us survive] -- as will no doubt result from the now-inevitable World War III.) Footnote: my late oldest half-brother, one of the founding directors of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, said just before he died that he believed the election of Trump was the (true) beginning of the (real) end of the world.

Ingamarie's avatar

It doesn't look good, that is for sure.....and most of us haven't been paying enough attention to the real evil empire right under our noses. I'm Canadian, but the shock of my fellow citizens that our good friend is not threatening us makes me want to laugh...........and cry.

The journalist who's been telling us for years about our compliance with American foreign policy sins is forbidden for running to lead our so called socialist third party...........and a majority of us don't have a clue that our 'bestie' has been the bully of the third world for decades.

Madelaine Albright sat on msm telly and said the deaths of half a million Iraqi children between the two Gulf wars.........FROM ILLEGAL AMERICAN SANCTIONS..was worth it. MOST CANADIANS.......AND AMERICANS, YAWNED AND WENT TO BED TO SLEEP SOUNDLY.

I'm a lover of children. I cursed that bitch then and there and trust if there is an afterlife, she's roasting in Hell............but I'm an outlier......my passionate heart doesn't brush off murder...........now its Cuba on the ropes.......tomorrow it will be Venezuela, then Iran, the genocide will continue.........surely there's someone in eastern Europe deserves a drubbing?????

SO YES. iT'S LOOKING LIKE THE END TIMES.......unless a lot more of us wake up, find our heart and refuse to brush off the real acts of terror committed by uncle Sam..........while pointing our bony fingers at Russia or China.,

They really think we will be greeted as liberators.

JennyStokes's avatar

What is really 'galling' to me is that the US seems to REALLY think they have the weapons........this is total rubbish.

We (some of us know):

1: Without earth resources USA cannot make these weapons.

2. Where are the brains in US......they all left a long time ago when US did have brains.

3. What wages are these weapons makers going to pay?

Fran's avatar

It's not brains we have lost, but the loyalty of those we have voted into office who serve the interest of Israel by allowing it to determine our policies for their benefit.. AIPAC and it's money and influence have controlled our policies for decades, which include our many wars in the Middle east. Our elected presidents, Bush/Cheney, Obama, Trump, Biden, have all implemented Israel's wishes and they are all are to be held culpable. All of them. Each new the end game was Iran, and if Trump makes it a reality I don't trust our capacity to survive. The only person who has been totally open about this agenda is Jeffery Sachs, especially when he had a sit down with Tucker Carlson one night, and nothing was left out, and the focus was not on one person alone. Iran was always the end game.

Ingamarie's avatar

Alasdair Crooke was also pretty darn detailed on what Iran has done since Trump's June attack to improve their air defencel.....and capacity to hit back hard.

I think it won't be the one sided event Americans like to engage in....and maybe that should be all our hope.

IT'S WAY PAST TIME WE TALKED OUT LOUD AND OFTEN ABOUT AMERICA'S ILLEGAL UNILATERAL SANCTIONS.............that starve a country before America bombs it.

What's happening in Cuba now is atrocious.........and its all on America's list of mean spirited crimes.

Vin LoPresti's avatar

"Mean spirited" is rather euphemistic for Uncle Sam. Abhorrent might be closer.

Ingamarie's avatar

Hahahaha......I wasn't thinking of Uncle Sam..........I was thinking of all the American people who go along, often without knowing what their government is doing to little children who can't help being Iraqui, or Cuban, or Iranian.

It's a mean spirit that starves anyone.............for ideological reasons. And yes........for your leaders it's also a damned spirit.

Reminds me of dad. He never called anyone a liar. He went whole hog and told them they were 'God Damned liars". He was my mentor...a true socialist.

Nancy's avatar

Thanks for bringing up Cuba, too. And yes, the old playbook of sanctions first, e.g., Venezuela — and Iraq. Unfortunately, we have a supine Congress as well as a lunatic president. Note that it wasn’t Congress that sued to recover its Constitutional authority over tariffs — it was individual businesses.

Ingamarie's avatar

Didn't know that, but the shame multiplies.

Nancy's avatar

I should have mentioned that several states also sued over the tariff issue. But this court is more likely to be swayed by businesses. As one commentator said, the Court created Frankenstein in deciding Trump v. U.S. (its decision on presidential immunity) and now is trying to rein in Frankenstein. However, it is doing so selectively. Businesses, especially corporations, are worthy of protection — people, not so much.

Ingamarie's avatar

Capitalism marches on........beset on all sides, but determined that $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$will prevail!

Fran's avatar

I agree, and maybe that's why I'm so into Ancestry since my kin folk died of natural causes which may not be true this time around. Growing up with a mother, a devout anti-Zionist, who predicted the end times that involved Israel and Iran has made me really uncomfortable and fearful. Russia was also in her predictions, but I would tune her out. In regard to your statement I hate it when people come on these sites and talk up Israel's justification for mass murder, and don't even reference it as a genocide or express any compassion for the death and destruction of a people. I don't even think they see them as people. I also think many sources that gave this genocide great focus have watered it down, by providing too little coverage. So often they try to lead you to believe those uprisings among the Iranians are solely due to their government and it's policies which has to go. Not the sanctions imposed.

Ingamarie's avatar

Exactly Fran. Not the sanctions imposed.....or the CIA creeps working hard in Iran to convince a desperate people that the USA will help them do regime change.

The freaking Shaw of Iran's son yet.....being groomed for American puppet #2.

JennyStokes's avatar

I beg to differ Fran.

I had my kid in US schools............learned nothing. This was post Reagan era.

Fran's avatar

Jenny I'm sure your child learned many things, but perhaps in your estimation not enough. Granted a lot of the curricula in various areas of study were old school, but the curricula in many subject areas did come into the 21st century. Unfortunately big business operates with it's own interest at heart and doesn't necessarily reflect what they learned at school, especially when it comes to the natural environment. Too self serving.

JennyStokes's avatar

NO. No Geography/no world History/Book reports endlessly as for math!

Fran's avatar

JHS was a wash out except for a few teachers who approached teaching in a less traditional way, like lots of trips. HS was great and I learned a lot, but my interest was in the sciences and math, and I had the heads of the department. No complaints. Well, to be honest I did tell my history teacher that I wasn't interested in his kings, and queens, and generals since they did more harm then good, but tell me the history of ordinary people and I'll listen, and of course I failed, but the history teacher I got the second time around was the head of the department and he was great.

JennyStokes's avatar

I forgot to mention: Cops on the Campus of my daughters High School! How do kids learn anything...it's like being in a war zone.

Vin LoPresti's avatar

There are still smart people working in the US, Jenny, but they're marginalized for various reasons, all related to compliance with cultural norms of the moment. Bush then Obama toadie-ness when I was at the Labs, and now, the current regime's insanity. But always the thread of Israel and Zionism running through because, whether due to laxity or complicity, the entire US Federal Science establishment, from DOE to DOD to the labs has been infested and back-doored by the tiny hat monsters since they built the town of Los Alamos up the Jemez Mountains from here -- Manhattan Project. Or earlier.

They have AI, humanoid robots, sophisticated and deadly weapons, the will and choice to use them AGAINST US, cutting all or eliminating ALL programs of social uplift. They're killing us. NOW. Slowly and rapudly. It is not hyperbole. It's not a conspiracy theory. I see it. I hear it, I read it. I FEEL it....the assault on ANYTHING life affirming. The deadly assault on mental and physical and social and economic and spiritual WELL BEING.

Whatistobedone's avatar

....good. Thanks. I feel like I'm the only person going crazy, seeing the life or death (literally and figuratively) circumstances we are all in NOW, especially with AI and our dying mother Earth....I struggle to contain my red hot, searing, burning, rage. People are still polite. People still try to "make nice." People are civil. People ASSUME Nazis will act with good will and good intentions IF ONLY WE TRY HARDER. We're fighting Nazis. We're fighting for the lives of loved ones, community members, ourselves. NO time or energy for polite. NO time or energy for reasoning, for debate. This IS war. Hopefully, on our part, MLK JR. inspired "war," the "good fight," NON violent. If/when there is violence...the NAZIS will be the perpetrators no matter their attribution to us, the people....well, the ~67% if us NOT NAZIS.

JennyStokes's avatar

OF course there are smart people BUT what a JUMP it is Vin from a mediocre High School to University or college!

Vin LoPresti's avatar

True, Jenny. and I have firsthand evidence, having taught college freshman all those years ago. For most of these kids, one asked for situational rather than rote rehash thinking at one's peril, but we tried to help 'em, over the course of a year. Eventually they learned, "you're not going to do well on my exams by simply memorizing factoids". Whether they ended up as critical thinkers, I can't say, save for the dozen or so friends I stay in touch with -- who were thinkers before they came to higher ed anyway. Fran's focus is let's say elsewhere. Not that she's wrong, necessarily. But US public ed ain't nothing to pin medals on. by and large, unless it's for teacher survival in domestic war zones.
