I agree, Merenia. I too am an Australian and live in Perth. Would have loved it if Chris could have spoken here. But I’m sure facing one cancellation was enough to endure! I’m embarrassed beyond belief at the complicity and outright lies coming from the National Press Club. Israeli lobbying runs deep in Australian politics/society. I have just listened to the interview Chris had with David Marr - shame. Like you, I now rarely listen to Late Night Live since Philip Adam’s Left. Marr comes across as one arrogant incompetent commentator more interested in echoing his own vacuous rhetoric.

Excellent review of the divisions within news crews - particularly those who actually go out into war zones to report on what they see and experience compared to those who uncritically repeat from prepared official briefings.

Geacht bestuur van PEN Nederland,
Hieronder stuur ik u de speech die de Amerikaanse journalist Chris Hedges recent bij de National Press Club van Australië zou uitspreken, ware het niet dat de National Press Club de afspraak – vermoedelijk onder druk – op de valreep heeft afgezegd. Chris Hedges heeft zijn speech elders uitgesproken. Onder protest.
Ik stuur u de speech, omdat ik het bestuur van PEN Nederland wil vragen om (in elk geval in overweging te nemen om) deze speech aan alle leden van PEN Nederland te sturen, zodat ze kennis kunnen nemen van een excellent en uiterst relevant pleidooi voor de persvrijheid, altijd en overal, ook in tijden van oorlog en genocide.
Ik vraag het omwille van de 253+ journalisten die sinds 7 oktober 2023 in Gaza zijn vermoord - meer dan alle journalisten bij elkaar opgeteld die in de wereldoorlogen en alle oorlogen sindsdien zijn gesneuveld. Om te informeren over de dagelijkse stroom leugens en propaganda die ook door de Nederlandse mainstream media niet zelden als feiten worden opgedist. Omwille van "de waarheid en niets dan de waarheid" - zoals de Russische journalist Anna Politkovskaja schreef, vlak voordat zij op 7 oktober 2006 werd vermoord. En als pleidooi voor tegengas. We moeten iets doen. Dat is echt razend urgent.
De mensenrechten waaronder de vrijheid van meningsuiting, het recht van protest en de persvrijheid staan onder druk. Wereldwijd, ook in Nederland. Amnesty meldde het al in zijn jaarrapport 2020. De repressie is sinds de pandemie en het begin van de genocide in Gaza alsmaar toegenomen. In het Verenigd Koninkrijk, Duitsland, Nederland en op de sociale media zoals LinkedIn worden zij bestraft die zich uitspreken tegen genocide en vóór het recht en de mensenrechten.
Als we ons niet tegen die trend verzetten, actief en met z'n allen, als we het systematisch (ook door de regeringen Schoof 0.0 en Rutte I II III IV) ondermijnen van het recht de rechtsstaat de mensenrechten en de democratie 'gewoon' laten gebeuren, omdat we het niet als onze verantwoordelijkheid zien of ervoor terugschrikken buiten de stippellijntjes te kleuren, zou het in Nederland net zo kunnen worden als in de USA. Daar wordt overigens (ook) vlijtig aan het verzet gewerkt.
Nu, ik hoop van u te horen, liefst met witte rook.
