Lawyer Jennifer Harbury discusses the gruesome details of the Guatemalan genocide, and the role that the CIA and Israel played in facilitating this gruesome erasure of the indigenous population.
Harrowing story. The U.S. has such an ugly history in Latin America. Such a brave and impressive woman. No words are adequate. I hope she has achieved a measure of peace.
I hadnt realized Israel as well as the USA were so involved in the horrors of Central and South America. It always amazes me that some people survive such horrid experiences yet maintain a compassionate and loving manner.
Great interview with Jennifer. What a wonderful warm & brave woman. The CIA are responsible for so much horror & death but they are from the land of the free, yeah right.
Thanks for the reminder--- anyone who had their eyes open at the time either knew or suspected this was happening--- but it is really breathtaking when it is recounted by a witness.
Israeli contractors from the IDF are training our already overly militarized US law enforcement agencies.
Compelling / chilling discussion. I recall the lyin' times of the early 1980's on American TV and radio, when what was being portrayed to the US public about the Guatemalan conflict was the exact opposite of what was taking place. And now, in this talk (and her books) Ms. Harbury and Chris fill in the blanks to expose the torture and horror that we supported then and continue to support and defend these days in Gaza - supporting Israel in their genocide of Palestinians. Shameful then . . . shameful today. Thanks for this discussion and open truth telling in the Land of Lies.
Jennifer Harbury was interviewed by Democracy Now's Amy Goodman during the first Trump administration. From there I watched many of her speeches and interviews. She gives such a high resolution view into the reality of US foreign policy.
Eventually I forgot her name but recalled the story of her unending search for justice for the people of Guatemala and her murdered husband.
Thank you Chris Hedges for this interview. You keep the best company.
In 1823 the US formulated the Monroe Doctrine which told European countries to stay out of Central and South America. This is our playground to pillage and exploit!!
Today 202 years of Monroe is knocking at the border.
Nothing has changed but the technologies of weaponry and the fact that our little empire has all but reached its terminal demise.
On Friday, August 8, 2025, the Prime Minister of Canada, Mark Carney, addressed a few soldiers at Canada's military base in Trenton, ON. He announced raises for all of Canada's soldiers and plans of maybe/maybe not buying F-35s from USA. Mr. Carney sometimes mentions an "elbows up" campaign to move away from buying goods or traveling to USA. There is a "collapse" this summer in the once normal Canadian vacation in NY, New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine, among others. Presumably, hotels and inns there have laid off staff or closed entirely. I have a little mercy for "ordinary small business owners in USA" caught in this "Orwellian Hate Parade" of Canadians suddenly being told by government to shun USA (and its small business and tourism workers). Somehow, it is being suggested that Canada is "arming up" to fight THREE Great Powers with nuclear weapons, all at the same time. When I told a "local politician" he responded "there's nothing we can do." Canada's politicians are ventriloquist dummies, and they don't respond to a question with any sort of "opinion" that might be used against them, do not say, from their personal life as a paid politician, any analysis of the situation that would seem like "you support one particular side" and just use responses that "have no serious content." So if you depend on democracy working to bring your voice to YOUR elected representatives, and thence to The Powers That Be, those dummies are not doers.....so you need to fight "the failure of democracy" along with any issue that concerns you. If Canada sincerely COULD build a massive military force, any optimist would surely know the odds of "winning" do NOT favor Canada, and The Other Way would be to push negotiations among those Three Bullies Of Great Power, and to find some "friends" who are "On Your Side" which is how little people fight Big Bullies. C'mon, Carney, let's make FRIENDS, BUT are you ABLE!!!!!!???????????
I am a proud Canadian and am very happy Canada is finally pivoting away from integration with the USA. I was not in favour of it when it was proposed and shoved down our throats. Thanks to DJT and his 51st state comment - we are finally doing what we should have been doing all along - fostering interprovincial trade and diversifying foreign trading partners. I look forward to our having an increasingly defence independent of the USA - the only country layely to have threatened our sovereignty.
(i am an expat who has lived in Santiago Atitlán, Sololá (Guatemala) since 1986. The Guatemalan army massacred c. 14 & wounded c. 22 civilians on Dec. 2, 1990.) This been an excellent program. Thank you Chris & Jennifer!!
I have felt the same as you at times, Jodi. What I find distressing is the fact that many Americans don't know or even seem to want to know about the lies/distortions we have all been told since grade school - we are number one - the good guys! Even more depressing is how angry they can get when someone tries to inform them of the truth and stands against and exposes the lies - like in this discussion between Harbury and Hedges, about what happened in Guatemala in the early 80's. The US kill machine is in-deed quite horrific and rather righteous about its right to do as it pleases and hides it. Who knew?

The more I read, the more I wonder who actually won World War II.
It does seem the most sickeningly cruel of the fascists did doesnt it!

Make America Gut Again
We live in a sick world!
It brought tears to my eyes. Thank you Chris for your courage and resistance.

What a heroic woman Ms. Harbury is.

Chris, if you want to interview someone who knows about the use of blackmail, why don't you have Whitney Webb on?
