the amount of indifference to suffering people's plight, whether inflicted in gaza, sudan, the congo, myanmar or elsewhere around the globe, is staggering and as infuriating as is the impunity perpetrators [truly] enjoy. i wish you safe journeys to italy - and back! - and shall try to make it to genoa and rome, too.

let's persevere for peace, justice and dignity for all. stay safe, sound and sane!

Israel is a terrorist nation.

Yes indeed - Israel is a terrorist nation, however, the US is the number 1 terrorist nation in this world.

Bravo to our Italian brothers and sisters — not the government — it’s people. Yes, Western governments are enabling the genocide. We must stop them, not only with boycotts and strikes, but with votes or withholding of votes. Our voting options are not limited to genocide v. genocide unless we acquiesce. We must commit to withholding votes from any candidate who “supports” Israel, whether verbally, with votes to fund either offensive or defensive weapons, or by accepting donations from the Israeli lobby. And we should let them know early and loudly that we will not support them. We should be protesting in front of the DNC and the RNC. However, we can protest all we want, but the genocide will continue until we can force an arms embargo. The Vietnam War did not end until Congress voted to cut off funding. In my city, we are continuing to organize boycotts against Amazon and Target, among other companies, and are supporting worker strikes (thus far unrelated to Gaza), but I hope we will also contact our Congressional representatives to express support for pending House bill H.R. 876, which appropriately labels Israel’s atrocities a genocide, provides for the termination of financial support of and transactions with Israel by both our government and companies, and calls for the enforcement of domestic and international laws with respect to Israel. The bill currently has 20 sponsors in the House. If we flooded the House with support for the bill, that number would swell. We should remember that it was because of constituent opposition to a military confrontation with the Assad regime during the Obama administration that Congress let the White House know it would not support an overt military intervention in Syria. We should also let them know we will not tolerate military strikes inside or against Venezuela. Congress has abdicated its Constitutional duties, but so far, so have the people. We can change that.

And recently AIPAC is on now on the defensive. It's working just not fast enough. We can't give up!

Chris you say there is no mechanism to stop Israel, but that is not the case. Can you please put your full considerable influence behind Uniting for Peace Resolution 377A. Please can I ask you and all your followers to watch this discussion. This can be made to happen if we can only get people power in all our countries to lobby, push, strike, scream and do whatever it takes to move this to the top of the agenda of the millions of people across the world who care.

thank you so much for making me aware of this resolution, margaret. my country, i'm ashamed to say, seems to think that it can partially rid itself of its guilt and somehow make up for the holocaust, by now showering israel with all the arms it needs ... thus proving that it has not adequately dealt or come to terms with its past at all.

apart from that, my country, along with its EU+NATO allies, is preparing, at breathtaking speed, for yet another war, even though it should humbly advocate peace, having started - and lost - two world wars already.

Isn't it so horrible that no lessons seem to be learned by any of our countries Julia. Thanks for your courage in speaking up when it is so potentially dangerous to do so.

julia eden's avatar

it is horrible, indeed, for us little people, who would like to live in peace with ourselves and everyone else. we forget that big people draw their one and only lesson: "peace does not pay!"

while our comfort, in the global north, feeds on resources, raw materials and land available in and from the global south, at almost no cost, they make us believe. and put much effort into hiding or downplaying the enormous cost of lives lost, of natural and social environments destroyed, by sheer brute force ... *sigh!*

I hope and pray that more and more of us are aware and active Julia.

julia eden's avatar

so do i, myself, and me - which makes three, already ;-)

Your journey and voice restore my faith in humanity. Your first hand experiences with the atrocities of war raises the credibility of your words. Your spoken and written words have shaped my intolerance of man’s inhumanity to man.

Up until now, I have made a conscious effort to identify "the Israeli government" whenever I criticize what is happening in Gaza. It was with ignorance (a lack of knowledge) and naivety, mixed with a bit of hopefulness, that I endeavoured not to lay the blame on the people of Israel. But I can no longer ignore the facts.I have seen similar numbers such as those Hedges quoted:

"Few in Israel object. 82 percent of Israeli Jews support the idea of expelling the entire population of Gaza and nearly a half support killing them. 80 percent of Israelis say they are “not so troubled” or “not troubled at all” by reports of famine and suffering among the population in Gaza."

It just adds to the disgust, horror, and shame I feel as a member of the human race.

I sincerely hope that the white people of the West and beyond, realise that they too are tagged for a life of subjugation, servitude and extirpation, unless of course they belong to the elite and super-elite classes. It should be exceedingly evident that the war is one of class and not race.

Oh, to live in a country where unions have enough members and power to organize an effective strike.
