"Persians in Iran constitute roughly 61 percent of the population with various minority groups, who often suffer state repression, making up the remaining 39 percent. These ethnic groups include Azerbaijanis, Kurds, Lurs, Balochs, Arabs and Turkmens, along with religious minorities such as Sunnis, Christians, Baha’i, Zoroastrians, and Jews. "

Chris, I don't know if you've been following the reporting of Max Blumenthal about the status of religious and ethnic minorities in Iran, but it is clear that they do not "often suffer state repression." Max visited various Jewish synagogues in Iran. They live in peace and prosperity and have full citizenship rights. The Jews Max interviewed all said they felt very comfortable living in Iran and definitely did not wish to move to Israel. In one neighborhood Max visited, there was a Jewish synagogue in close proximity to a Zoroastrian temple. This integration of many ethnicities and religions in Iran is widespread. Most of the minority groups in Iran claim loyalty to the Islamic Republic even when those same groups in other countries are hostile to Iran (for example, the Iranian Kurds). In fact, the late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei (and his son Mojtaba, the new Ayatollah) are Azeris.

I think it's important, in this time of Western Empire warmongering against Iran, that we are careful not to repeat anti-Iranian talking points that are not based on fact but are used to justify the warmongering.

Six million Poles were killed by the Nazis in WW2. They included Jews, Slavs and Gypsies, the three ethnic groups that Hitler sought to eliminate from Europe. I believe that Holocaust scholars appropriated this number for the number of Jews killed. Other academics put the number of Jews killed at ~1.5 million. The 6 million figure, and the extermination of Jews in WW2 has been continually put before our eyes in cinema, books, and Holocaust memorials and museums. Much less publicised is the 26 million Russians killed by the Nazis, or the 20 million Chinese killed by the Japanese.

It is time to bury the dead, and work towards a more equal, peaceful world. It would be ironic if between them Trump and Netanyahu are accelerating the painful end of the Empire, and the birth of a truly multi-polar world.
