Such a welcome contrast to the muck we are subjected to on a daily basis by the mainstream media on Israel and Palestine. Thank you Professor Khalid and Chris. I once likened Chris’s Substact program to a lifeboat in a sea of propaganda. Today, among other things, Professor Khalid summarized so succinctly the hypocrisy of western states now conveniently “supporting” the creation of a Palestinian state without addressing the occupation, or even the ongoing genocide itself, while continuing to supply arms. And thanks, also, for the takedown of the NYT’s inexcusable “coverage.” The NYT censored many of my own comments on its so-called news stories on Israel and Gaza. What is amusing and ironic, is its censorship of a more general comment I made pleading for honesty from politicians, specifically, in that case, Democratic politicians, whose constant lies and propaganda as repeated in the press had become exhausting. I had to laugh in retrospect that “the paper of record” saw it necessary to censor a simple plea for honesty from our political representatives— that the paper would find that threatening.
Having come from the working class and being against Israel’s genocide, the New York Times quickly banned all my comments — they are never printed anyway. But I take comfort in the fact that everyone else is saying the same things. I don’t care about elites the way I did as a young person. There is a lot of rot there.
I noticed with the University of Michigan that there were bodies comprised of administrators, profs, and students that could be appealed to in decisions against pro Palestine activists, but those progressive decisions were overturned by the Regents of the university.
Thank you, Mr Hedges and Professor Khalid, for this honest, albeit bleak, assessment of…well, almost everything. This is why I have shunned the legacy media and instead subscribed to independent journalists. It infuriates me that almost every aspect of our lives is being controlled by a small minority. It breaks my heart that college students are being deprived of the ability to speak out without fear of punishment. It breaks my heart that college students are being deprived from exposure to some of the best in academia. It breaks my heart that superior academicians have been forced to retire. I’m grateful to have grown up in the 1960s, and I’m grateful to be old.
There is no academic freedom. I discovered this when seeking allies in the departments of social work, medical ethics, and pastoral counseling of a local university to demand patient access to “audit trails,” so that we know who has been accessing our medical records. That university is associated with a large healthcare system and shares the same legal team. The initial correspondence was promising until they conferred with legal. After that, all messages were ignored, in abject conflict with their mission statements and posted values.
Well look see here, there’s this very popular script that’s been around for many centuries that portrays a plan for mankind. Those with a copy of this script think it’s there calling and duty in life to present this play on the earth’s stage. It has a cast of billions with incredible stage props, complete with actual real horrific death scenes. Trouble is there’s no audience or critics.

Curtailing academic freedom renders a university irrelevant to those seeking knowledge. Thus an academic institution becomes a church instantly.
