I’m a retired, disabled social worker who believes that there is a “lonely road of defiance” waiting for each of us. A social ill that we are uniquely equipped to address. I was able bodied until 2016 when a catastrophic injury during a routine medical procedure changed my life forever. I’m now a shut in who had to stop working, driving, traveling, and reading for pleasure. But I can still think, talk, and type, and I spend my productive hours engaged in disability access microadvoacy. It’s just one thing but it’s still one thing. Like the volcano in The Little Prince. At least that’s how I see it.

If we remember that silence is complicity........each of our voices, however small, or limited by circumstance, can make a difference.

I'm a retired English teacher who's been active in progressive politics since I retired. I see the degree of shut down Gaza is causing, here where I live and across the west. Truly being 'a good person' has become harder.

But then, perhaps it always was harder than those who come out in good times, and disappear when the struggle gets 'problematic', imagine. We fly the Palestinian flag from our balcony.........it's a small act. But its also a Declaration.

ISOequanimity's avatar

We’re each drops in the collective ocean of change!

Ingamarie's avatar

Yes. But most often, individual resistance doesn't mention Gaza.....or connect many dots between what America is doing now, and what it has been doing to people in other countries for decades.

We not only need to speak up......we need to complicate our own analysis....and come to an understanding of the connections between black balling this good woman....and the loss of civil liberties at home.

I walked with the Palestinian protests in my city for over a year, until my legs gave out. It is with shame that I have to report the rallies didn't grow..and most of my fellow citizens had better things to do with their time.

Shopping on Amazon, etc. etc., most likely.

Ruby's avatar

Thank you Ingamarie for walking until your legs gave out. Thank you for continuing to resist with your thoughts here.

I might be old and disabled, but I still have my voice. Now the US government is trying to take that away.

Much love to Francesca Albanese, a role model for us all!

So interesting is right that the current filth- bag purveyor of lies at the UN, Danny Dannon should call her a witch. I was just recently at the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, MA viewing their exhibit on the Salem Witch Trials. Nearly of the accused, who were ultimately murdered, owned land, had property. "How to dispossess them?" "When is the right moment?" must have been on their minds, just like a Zionist. It was an attack on 24 women and 1 man. All labelled witches. Francesa Albanese is our global heroine! They are so afraid of her. The disturbing thing about the Salem Witch trials is it took over 330 years to bring restorative justice about for only 25 people. What a perfect crystalization to say that Palestine is a portal into history. Btw, on the program Dialog Works, Nima recently interviewed a retired government worker who activism has earned him the very same sanctioning by the EU. He also has no access to the funds in his accounts and depends on friends to buy him food, pay his bills. That's special treatment for people who are telling the truth.

Ingamarie's avatar

And that is a warning yes??? They can come for any of us...freeze our meagre assets and put us out on the streets.

THOSE PRECIOUS WESTERN VALUES ARE LOOKING PRETTY TAWDRY THESE DAYS....but now we know why there's often a dollar sign before of after them.

Albanese should have been the one to receive the Nobel Peace prize this year, as has been said before by many. Perhaps alongside Greta Thunberg, also courageous in her eloquent support for Palestinians and more protected so far. The two of them with their demographics might provide a broader basis for support for peace

Sera's avatar

It’s a sad fact that because the prize was wasted on a Zionist, any future award, even to true heroes, will be worthless.

When Henry Kissinger was awarded the prize Tom Lehrer retired, saying that this had made satire impossible.

But this was much worse, because it was so of a piece with the Zionist domination of western institutions. Ironically, Kissinger quipped that if he weren’t Jewish he might be antisemitic. I imagine that he’d be sanctioned today too, which puts a satirical spin on the whole mess.

Ingamarie's avatar

Instead, the Norwegians showed us they too are complicit........awarding it to a nationalist fascist, openly calling for American corporations to warmonger their way back into Venezuela.........and 'get rich'........reveals the Nobel committee as American appeasers.

Too smart to give Trump the Peace Prize the warmonger craves.......real Orwell yes? War is Peace?? But cowardly enough to award it to a right wing betrayer of her own country, instead of to Albanese.

Being of Norwegian extraction, I was much shamed by that travesty...but again:

LET'S OPEN OUR EYES........SEE THE LINES OF POWER AND THE LIMITS OF WESTERN JUSTICE....it's being rather openly telegraphed to the world.

Will Weaver's avatar

Have pre-ordered her book and you should too. “They” will certainly try to suppress it….. And such tough times for Ms Albanese, but imagine the glory coming her way when this dark chapter of history is over. She, above most I can think of, will be remembered with honors and statues and peace prizes. Bless her and keep her.

In all fairness,

Biden should not be let off without a mention either.

Both Trump and Biden have basically committed at least assisted MURDER of Palestinians too .

That is all I will say on the subject .

I will be BLUNT.

Kate's avatar

And Hilary Clinton is disgusting in her disparaging comments on young Americans who speak out against Israel and Zionism. She is another Zionist stooge.

John Ressler's avatar

HRC is disgusting to me even when she is quiet.

Ingamarie's avatar

It's starting to look like the Israeli lobby owns the USA.

Susan Becraft's avatar

The Israeli lobby has owned the U.S. government for years. Look no further than the money most politicians take from AIPAC. I made a vow long ago to never vote for anyone who takes even a penny of money from an Israeli PAC. And I refuse to vote for anyone who supports Israel.

I will always question Israel’s role in both Kennedy assassinations, btw.

Ingamarie's avatar

It's shocking how much power they have........and how much money flows into their coffers........up here in Canada as well.

John Ressler's avatar

Go to - trackaipac.com -to read exactly how much $$$ the Dems and the R's get from AIPAC.

Ingamarie's avatar

We will look it up....and try to pass it on.

Though truth be told.......our local left wing party is going a bit silent recently....and I do suspect the genocide, and the hopelessness of opposing it openly, is part of the cold shoulder we resisters are experiencing.

Frightening how fear based the majority of privileged westerners actually are, n'est-ce pas??

HAP- Libertarian Socialism's avatar

that's to whitewash the U.S. politicians, IMHO, of all responsibilities

I have no doubt they never were no doubt

Ingamarie's avatar

I read recently, I think in Hedges, that the Israeli lobby defeated two democratic candidates.......and spent millions on the job.....so as an outsider looking in......it sounds like opposing the Jewish lobby can only be done from outside party politics.

Susan Becraft's avatar

AIPAC boasts about the candidates they’ve defeated. An excellent Twitter account is @TrackAIPAC. They expose the names of politicians on the take. IMO, it’s a money laundering operation.

The world desperately needs champions of human rights like Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese to identify and help stop war criminals and their atrocities.

Jefferson wrote in the Declaration of Independence that King George III was in the process of taking action "...to compleat the works of death, desolation and tyranny, already begun with circumstances of Cruelty and perfidy scarcely paralleled in the most barbarous ages, and totally unworthy of the Head of a civilized nation."

The same words could be used today to describe the perpetration of genocide committed by Netanyahu, and of Trump's aiding and abetting him. Courageous people like SR Albanese are heroines of the highest order.

Feral Finster's avatar

No argument from me. What does anyone propose to do about it?

Moral arguments are lost on sociopaths, just as an armed robber already knows that "Thou Shalt Not Steal!" and he doesn't care, as long as he has the gun and you do not.

Ruby's avatar

What to do? It's already happening. People across the globe have formed, and will continue to form small, community-based groups that are rebuilding the relationships that were intentionally broken over decades, or longer. These groups are based on valuing humanity, not profit/property, not driven by an economic system. I see these groups not as a massive militarized force that will beat back fascism. I think of them as the holders of the light, groups who will preserve honesty, truth, peace, justice, equality for all, through the dark times we will live in. Some day, maybe decades from now, if we are ernest and true and the others don't blow the world up, we will collectively have held on long enough for a new level of humanity to emerge. Something maybe that we can not yet imagine.

Liana Chenoweth Kornfield's avatar

Thank you Margaret. I see what you see. It is already happening and it is building, though the governmental MSM will do it's damndest to hide and supress and "sanction" it.

Feral Finster's avatar

And power scan safely ignore or smash all that.

Ruby's avatar

You are correct, Feral. Truncheons, bullets and bombs do rip into and through fragile human bodies, destroying them. It is equally correct to say- that which is good, true, peaceful, just, and determined to weather the many dark and frightening human storms- will persist. Must persist....... Regardless.

America, Capitalist owned and driven, is a monstrous, evil, psychotic empire thrashing in its mortal decline in the desire to destroy the world because its vicious exploitation and destruction is all it is capable of and embodies. In its effort to use the Nazi Zionist regime as its club and enforcer it has destroyed the illusion of its hegemony and prepared for its dissolution.

I found this article more depressing than the “rebranding genocide” article. If this can happen to a westerner and UN special rapporteur and international lawyer… and all the west is just looking!! No action… nothing!!?

Ingamarie's avatar

Let's us see clearly who supports the 'rule based order' does it not???

Ingamarie's avatar

This is a chilling report, but it is what all true resisters of the Trumpian States of Amerika need to read. Because imagining what's wrong with America is one ethically challenged president and the goons he surrounds himself with is a very small and rather damaged imagination.

We all need to read, and re read what Albanese is courageous enough to tell us about the monetary ties so many American and western firms have to Israel, and the weapons of mass destruction industries............and then:

WE NEED TO SCREW UP OUR COURAGE AND RESIST THE GENOCIDAL POWERS, AND THE POWERS THAT WINK AT GENOCIDE....even tariffs are a destraction from this horrific 'wealth creation scheme' in progress.

Reynold Reimer's avatar

What about expanding the boycott of Israeli entities to include the companies listed in Ms. Albanene's report? That may expand the group of citizens paying attention to the issue.

Ingamarie's avatar

Wouldn't that be wonderful..........if each of us would repost Chris and his report on all the sites we comment on. Too many of us still react to the superficial news cycle...or vent our frustrations. We need to see the full outlines of the Monster we are fighting....

Making money off genocide should say it all. THE CORRUPTION IN WESTERN FREE MARKET CAPITALISM HAS GONE VIRAL.......and its a pandemic that may well be coming for us all.

All my R-E-S_P-E-C-T to you both! And before Francesca's current UN position, she co-authored the handbook on Palestinian refugees:

Law is meaningless. Enforcement is all that matters.

Ingamarie's avatar

Law is not meaningless........if it were that, it would not now be so under attack.

Feral Finster's avatar

Mostly, it's just ignored.

Ingamarie's avatar

THat does seem to be the case.

karif's avatar

open lawfare is the replacement and likely no different than what any black or brown person has never known any thing but

Ingamarie's avatar

YES!! But they must first build a 'contempt for the law' into most of us law abiding citizens. Then when someone like Albanese has the temerity to apply the law.........the lawless can black ball her with impunity.

If we actually respected the law......while working to make it more ethical....they'd never get away with what they are doing now. But neoliberal capitalists worked hard since the 80's to substitute 'wealth creation' lawlessness..........and convince us it was the law that was the ASS.

They did the same with government.......subverted it, captured it.......then told us citizen dummies government was the bad thing....the law of the jungle determined by the most powerful is what they've treated us to instead.

Typical shell game.

Francesca Albanese is a s/hero of the highest acclaim. She is powerful, smart, committed, moral, and will never give up. If we had elected leaders like her across the, US, Europe, and the world, what a different place our troubled world would be in. We need to support courageous thinkers and policy makers like her, no matter what! Thanks for a great interview and your amazing work as always Chris Hedges. You're a national treasure!!
